Matthew Walker Ph.D is a sleep expert, professor of neuroscience at UC Berkeley and author of “Why We Sleep”. In a podcast interview with Peter Attia, Matthew outlines what some very preliminary research is showing in relation to CBD and how it may impact your sleep. 

High levels of THC (like in traditional marijuana) can sometimes mislead people because they fall asleep faster so they assume they’re able to get a better sleep after consuming marijuana. However, even though you may fall asleep faster, you don’t actually get as much sleep in the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) part of your sleep cycle. REM sleep is crucial for helping with learning and memory. The same impact is not found with CBD. CBD does not seem to impact your REM sleep which may be why it helps you get a better quality sleep.

Other ways that Matthew Walker thinks CBD may positively impact sleep are:

  • CBD might help reduce your core body temperature which improves sleep 
  • An improvement in sleep might actually be a secondary benefit of other impacts of CBD like a decrease in anxiety. If you’re feeling less anxious, you’re likely able to fall asleep and stay asleep longer.
